Native Plants

PLANTING NATIVE

Why Plant Native Species?
You can choose from a variety of native ferns, flowers, plants, shrubs, trees or woody plants suited to almost any backyard. Native plants are beautiful, hardy, less expensive, easy to maintain, beneficial to the environment and thrive in Illinois gardens.

  • Native plants do not require fertilizers and require fewer pesticides than lawns.
  • Native plants require less water than lawns and help prevent erosion.
  • Native plants help reduce air pollution.
  • Native plants provide shelter and food for wildlife.  Native flowering species will provide an abundance of nectar and attract wildlife from butterflies and songbirds, to chipmunks and beneficial insects, while other natives offer food and refuge to a variety of other wildlife.
  • Native plants promote biodiversity and stewardship of our natural heritage.
